Why is AFSC taking a break?

March 1, 2026

Thank you for visiting the Age Friendly Sisters Country website.

After six years of promoting the good ideas of Sisters residents through our fiscal sponsorship model and counseling support, AFSC is taking a break from active community service in 2026.

Our mission has always been to make Sisters livable and accessible for all who reside here. We hope you will agree that each of the Action Teams AFSC has sponsored since 2020 has in its own way advanced that objective. In one last Action Team-like gesture, in late 2025 we supported a project led by the Serving Our Seniors (SOS) study group to identify the service gaps preventing our senior population — already almost 40% of the Sisters census, and growing — from aging in place safely and happily in this beautiful location we all call home.

We hope our community will respond to the findings of that important project, and that committed residents will step forward to lead, support, and volunteer on projects to address this challenge. If you have navigated to our site because YOU have an idea for a project to improve livability in Sisters Country and you are looking for feedback or support, we offer a couple of suggestions.

Have an idea?

First, there is a checklist of actions you as an innovator can take to analyze your idea for feasibility before you pitch the idea to our community. Once you've gone through this analysis process and are convinced your idea has merit and will work in our community, you can take your idea the next level by attending a public meeting of the Citizens 4 Community-sponsored Community Builders. These monthly meetings are attended by Sisters Country organizers, non-profit leaders, funders, representatives of the City of Sisters and other government entities, and others who simply want to support and encourage the good ideas of others. You may meet people whose objectives are similar to yours, folks who would volunteer to work with you on your idea, and many experienced people who can help you decide the best way to proceed. If you are relatively new in our community, it can be very helpful to learn what is already being done by folks here to make Sisters a better place to live. There might even be an existing organization where your idea can find a home.

We wish you success in moving your idea forward, and we know you will encounter a welcoming and supportive community in your efforts.
